ALS Awareness Month

Throughout the month of May, focus is placed on a rare disease known in its abbreviated form as ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that severely impacts the nervous system. This month, medical communities, families and organizations will be raising awareness to promote further research, advocate for loved ones, and support those affected. With ALS, muscle functionality is reduced due to the breaking down of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. When these neurons break down and die, communication between the brain and the body’s muscles is lost. Over time, individuals living with this disease experience muscle weakness and, eventually, the inability to move those muscles. Weak/stiff muscles, lack of coordination, muscle loss, muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing, mild cognitive impairment, difficulty maintaining weight and overactive reflexes are common symptoms. While medications and therapies can help reduce and prolong severe symptoms, there is no known cure.

Those living with ALS require support to meet daily living needs. Care at home can be a more comfortable alternative to receiving care elsewhere. Here at Aqua Home Care, we refer trusted caregivers from our registry to those seeking support at home. We mindfully match caregivers with their clients based on a variety of factors, including experience, personality, and specific needs. Full-time and live-in care services are available to ensure that safety, comfort and personal routines are maintained whenever needed. Services can include:

  • Medication reminders
  • Transportation
  • Mobility assistance
  • Meal preparation and feeding
  • Supervision
  • Companionship
  • Grooming, bathing, and dressing
  • House cleaning
  • And more

ALS is a disease that severely impacts the everyday lives of those affected. While a cure has not been found, raising awareness, making donations and advocating for further research can help. If you or a loved one are experiencing any concerning symptoms, please speak with your doctor. Tests can be preformed to diagnose or rule out certain causes. As always, should daily living care be necessary, our Aqua Home Care team is here to help. In-home caregivers from our registry are available to provide quality, compassionate support right in the comfort of home.
