Stress Awareness: Reducing and Managing Stress for Healthy Living

While some degree of stress can encourage us to give our needed attention to something or to stay motivated on completing a task, there are adverse effects when stress hormones are produced in high levels or for prolonged periods. Whether stemming from work, family, finances, health concerns, life changes/experiences, relationships, or otherwise, we all feel stress from time to time. Reducing and managing stress is key, and as April is Stress Awareness Month we are reminded of the importance in doing so. Stress impacts both mind and body, and chronic stress can lead to physical ailments. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is made in the adrenal glands and becomes elevated during moments of anxiety or stress. Individuals whose cortisol levels remain elevated for long durations or who experience rises in cortisol levels on a routine basis may endure cardiovascular issues, muscle pain, tension headaches, migraines, mood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory issues, sleep disturbances and more.
