Older Driver Safety Awareness

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week is observed from the 2nd through the 6th of December. During this time, more light is shone on the importance of safe driving and how aging can affect one’s ability to do so as safely as before. Aging can have an impact on key areas that are vital for getting behind the wheel. Sensory abilities, movement/range of motion and reaction time can weaken, making operating a vehicle more difficult. Taking certain medications may also impair driving ability. Drivers must meet state requirements in order to maintain their license, and sometimes there are ways to do so even when presented with challenges. Still, driving may not be recommended, or allowed, when requirements are unable to be met.

Here at Aqua Home Care, we want all individuals to remain safe whether on the road or otherwise. For those who are facing limitations due to aging or other factors, in-home care may be a beneficial option that allows individuals to receive care services while staying in familiar surroundings. Our team refers caregivers to those seeking support at home, and, along with tending to personal needs, transportation is a service that can be provided. This allows caregivers to help their clients continue to do many of the things they are used to doing all while in the care of a trained professional. Running errands, grocery shopping, doctor’s visits and more are made easier with a trusted caregiver who will drive and accompany their clients.

When it comes to safe travels, it is important to report any concerns you may have for yourself or for your loved one. A doctor may be able to help avoid loss of driving privileges by proactively treating conditions that can affect driving ability. Aging can impact abilities needed to drive effectively, and it is imperative to be aware of any changes that can make it unsafe for you or others to get behind the wheel. The Department of Motor Vehicles will determine eligibility for license renewal.

For those who may not require daily living care but are unable to drive, there are options. Public transportation or other reliable transportation services are used by many who, for one reason or another, are not able to operate a vehicle.

Remember, it is important for the safety of all drivers and their passengers to avoid driving under any circumstances that would deem you unable to drive safely. Seeking care from your doctor may help. We at Aqua Home Care would like to wish everyone safe travels whether driving near or far.
