Fall Concerns: Knowing Your Risk

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults face a greater risk than other age groups when it comes to the likelihood of sustaining a fall-related injury. In fact, individuals who are of advanced age are treated in emergency rooms for fall injuries on a daily basis. Since approximately three million fall traumas occur annually, there is certainly a great need to raise awareness and offer support to those who may be most in jeopardy. With statistics like these, a fall injury is likely to hit close to home for many. Knowing your risk, or the risk of your loved one, encourages mindfulness as well as the taking of preventative measures.

While anyone can experience a fall, there are factors that can increase the probability, making it even more important to take precaution. Our Aqua Home Care team is committed to safety, and caregivers from our registry are trained to assist their clients in a way that promotes safety, comfort and wellbeing. It is important to take all aspects of one’s personal situation into consideration when determining risk and making a plan. In raising awareness, we would like to share some common risk factors that can increase fall concerns:

  • Mobility limitations
  • Balancing issues
  • Taking certain medications
  • Neurological conditions
  • Muscle weakness
  • Heart conditions
  • Bone loss
  • Poor coordination
  • Prior injuries
  • Memory loss
  • Age-related conditions

The chances of falling and becoming injured from falling are increased when certain conditions are present. Mindfulness and prevention are key, and taking precautions are highly recommended. As always, it is important to know your risk, speak with your doctor, and seek support if necessary. Should support be required, Aqua Home Care is here to help. Providers we refer are knowledgeable, compassionate and experienced in guiding those with increased risk safely and comfortably.
